Kim Cavendish, President and CEO of the Museum, answered a few questions for us.
Can you please tell us a little bit about what goes on behind the scenes as you
prepare for this year’s April 5th fundraising event?
Much work involving lining up the restaurants and obtaining all the materials from
these very busy chefs and managers. Scheduling staff and volunteers to run an event
of this size requires much skill with logistics and organization. Soliciting and
collecting silent auction items is a full time job alone. Items need to be
catalogued and signs and bid sheets need to be made.
She also told us a little bit about some of the favorite restaurants coming back this year..
Capital Grille, who won 1st place for the Peoples’ Choice Award will be back. Others
are Yolo, Trulucks, D’Angelos, Mancinis, Grille 401, SoLita
What is the mission of the Museum of Discovery & Science?
Our mission is to provide pathways to science learning through our exhibits,
programs and films. MODS (as it is commonly known) depends upon a “tripod” of funding in order to meet our
operating budget. The three “legs” of the tripod are earned income,
philanthropy/events, and government grants. MODS is unusual in the museum world by
virtue of the fact that about 76% of our operating budget is generated from earned
income from admissions, café, store, rentals and various fee-based educational
programs, and less than 4% comes from government grants. That leaves about 20% of
our programmatic needs must be met by the generosity of those who attend our
fundraising events, and those corporations and individuals who support the museum
through sponsorships and gifts. Without this support from our events, such as the
upcoming Wine and Culinary Celebration, we could not continue to offer the huge
array of educational programs, exhibits and IMAX films that our visitors now enjoy.
Don’t forget. Event takes place Friday April 5th.
