Virginia Wine Country (Eastern Virginia) Part Two with Saudé Creek Wine

In part two of my Virginia wine posts, wanted to tell you about the folks at Saudé  Creek Vineyards.

Not far from where the Pamunkey and York River meet, this winery is cranking out vino and quite a few weddings from what I hear.

A former tavern during George Washington's time it was bought in 2008 and planted with 6 types of grapes when it started.

During my visit, got a full tour of its facility, fermenting area and grounds.

I recommend the tasting of its reds and whites where for $10 you'll get to try some 7 wines and plenty of hospitality.

One of its most impressive whites was the Vidal Blanc, a zesty off dry vino with peach like aroma.

Want to go premium? for $17, get the 7 on the regular tasting plus 4 unique vinos.

I was intrigued by the Pamunkey Fall, named after the river that lays just north of the winery. This Chardonnay and Chardonel (sort of like a cousin of Chardonnay) is fresh and fruit forward like. The apricot on it had me quite happy.

On the reds, the 1791, a Bordeaux like blend with good tannins yet not over powering made me think of espresso.
Plus, the Syrah, with its earthiness and spice and dark cherries was another outstanding full body vino. Saudé Creek is doing it right.

What started out as a Cider Apply winery and its now producing about 6,500 cases of wine a year, Saudé  Creek is a good spot to tour while in Eastern Virginia.

Owners Jason knight (who was actually testing and pressing some vino while we toured the stainless tanks)
and John Britt are putting the right touches on Virginia Wine Country.

Please wine responsibly, and as always, Salud!
